The importance of the “vision thing”

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10724671

It just so happens that we are looking at the vision, mission and values for three of our clients at the moment, and the article in today’s NZ Herald, reinforces the importance of this as “a top key driver of employee engagement” (Dr Neal Knight-Turvey).

We often use the analogy of the army General who is charging over the hill to fight the battle and looks over his shoulder to find that the troops are not with him! Particularly in today’s business environment, it can feel like a battle and there has never been a better time to ensure that your team are with you and helping you to achieve your goals and objectives. This starts with a clearly thought through and articulated vision.

Reference is made in the above article to Michael Hill’s 30 year vision to have 1000 stores worldwide. I personally struggle with a 30 year vision as it just seems so far into the future, but the simplicity of it certainly makes it easy to convey to staff. Similarly there’s no point having a “small” vision – in fact that is really a contradiction as by it’s nature the vision should stretch the thinking, attitude and actions of the team.

So go on, step outside your business for a while and think about where you’d really like to take your business, and what it would look like when it got there, and if you need some help then give me a call!
